Eren Paper’s North Wales-based plant: the company plans to “repurpose and expand” its Shotton Paper Mill to deliver “a market leading operation”

Türkiye’s Eren Holding has applied for planning permission for a new tissue mill at its Shotton Paper Mill manufacturing plant in North Wales, UK.

The company said its plans to repurpose and expand Shotton Paper Mill so it “will deliver a market leading operation, with the newest innovations and technologies, making the mill an exemplar flagship facility in the UK and Europe.”

Work is underway to redevelop and expand the former UPM Shotton Paper Mill site on 85 hectares, to include a new paper factory and processing plant.

Planning permission is already in place for three machines to manufacture paper tissues.

The new application is to adapt and raise the height of a building to accommodate the first of those machines which will have a manufacturing capacity of 67,000tpy.

The application also allows for the erection of small-scale structures to support manufacturing.

The option to operate two more tissue machines at the plant will depend on future market conditions.

Shotton Mill Board Member, Eren Eren, said: “The company is very pleased with progress so far on site and we are excited about our growth and future operations in North Wales”

Established in 1969, Eren Holding is a major family-run conglomerate with headquarters based in Istanbul.

The Shotton mill was founded in 1983 and until recently was a newsprint paper plant run by UPM.

When UPM sold the site and Eren took over in May 2021, the processing of recovered material from across the UK has continued with the collection of recovered materials from around the UK for recycling and preparation of wood for a biomass plant that is producing energy.

The company’s plans include making Shotton Mill “one of the UK’s largest and most advanced technology paper mills, with a paper production capacity of 750,000 tonnes per year of containerboard and 67,000 tonnes per year of tissue.”
