A mock-up of Metsä Tissue’s 240,000tpy plant for the UK and Irish markets

Metsä Tissue has announced plans to boost its professional and consumer tissue offering in the UK and Ireland with a 240,000tpy tissue mill project.

The plant will be built in several phases over the next decade and sites in Newark and Hull are being considered. The location will be announced in the first half of 2022.

According to the company, the facility will be based on “best available technologies, with a world class environmental performance”.

Production is to be based on using sustainable fresh fibre pulp, and the first phase of the investment would be ready during 2025 to serve the professional and consumer tissue markets in the UK and Ireland.

Esa Kaikkonen, Chief Executive, Metsä Tissue, said: “Over the past couple of years we have been developing a Future Mill concept in relation to our planned tissue mill expansion in Mariestad, Sweden.

“Our studies show that we will be able to utilise more efficient and better technology than today, which will make us more competitive and more environmentally efficient.

“We see great opportunities for growth in the UK market and are planning to supply the market locally based on our Future Mill concept.”

No machinery supplier has yet been officially announced for the project and a spokeswoman for Metsä Tissue was unable to comment further at this time.
