Cascades has temporarily shut down one of its two 50,000tpy paper machines at its St. Helens, Oregon, tissue facility.

The machine uses virgin fibre and supplies the company’s converting plants, primarily the Scappoose, Oregon, facility.

Production of the second machine which is in a separate building is not impacted.

Cascades said that inspections carried out as part of its annual maintenance shutdown which began on 11 September determined that additional verification of the structural condition of the building was required.

The length of the shutdown is currently being determined, and Cascades said it is now evaluating the financial and operational impacts of the situation on the forecasts for its tissue operations in the current year.

It will provide additional information once the analysis has been completed.
