(PPI Pulp & Paper Week) – Parent roll tissue pricing appeared to be moving up, with producers seeking a $40-50/ton increase, contacts have said.

One contact noted “very strong demand for parent rolls and converter inventory is low” in the US East from both independent converters as well as some integrated producers.

Another pointed at rising virgin pulp prices as a reason for the increase on rolls and pointed out that roll demand appeared strongest for white products for bathroom, facial, and napkin end products.

In the USA, list pricing for market pulp for northern bleached hardwood kraft and southern bleached hardwood kraft is up 10% this month vs a year ago, and up 6% for bleached eucalyptus.

Since September, two parent roll PMs started in the USA. White Mountain in Gorham, NH, started a new 36,000 tonnes/yr machine with parent rolls for the consumer market.

ST Tissue started a converted uncoated freesheet paper machine in Franklin, VA, making parent rolls for AfH converters, with capacity of 70,000 tonnes/yr. Also, in third quarter last year, Kruger shut its PMs 1 and 2 with 30,000 tonnes/yr of parent roll capacity at its New Westminster, BC, mill.
