WAUSAU PAPER EXPANDS IN AFH SECTOR
In early June US company Wausau Paper announced
the expansion of its line of value added, towel
and dispenser products, used in Class A office
building and other awayfrom- home settings. Among
the newly introduced products are redesigned
DublSoft(R) premium towel and tissue lines, new
DublSoft(R) OptiFold(TM) and EcoSoft(TM) Green
Seal(R) OptiFold(TM) environmentally preferable
towels, and additions to the Silhouette(R) dispensers
available in a range of translucent colors that
coordinate with higher-end away-from-home washroom
environments.
Acting on the growing trend among building managers
to emphasize restroom decor and comfort along
with function, the company's Towel & Tissue
segment introduced DublSoft(R) folded and roll
towels with an exclusive embossed leaf design
and twoply bath tissue with an embossed floral
pattern. In addition to its appealing consumer
product- like characteristics, the previously
introduced DublSoft(R) OptiCore(R) bath tissue
features a patented two-part core for optimum
savings in maintenance time and costs.

COLOMBIA
TOSCOTEC CRESCENT FORMER FOR COLOMBIA
In April an unnamed Colombian company ordered a rebuild
of one of its existing tissue machines from Toscotec. The
company, which makes tissue and kraft paper, has worked
with Toscotec for many years. Its white two ply tissue
produced from recycled paper is today one of the top brands
on the Colombian market.
The project consists in the rebuilding of the existing
PM1 tissue machine from the actual Fourdrinier type to
a Crescent Former. The tissue machine will have the capability
to run at 1250 m/min production speed and a capacity of
65 tons/day with a net trim width of 3060 mm. The modification
will be carried out in two steps: the first will raise
machine speed to 700 m/min; and the second one the full
capability. The first step of the project will be completed
at the beginning of 2008 with a shutdown of 15 days.
Scope of supply includes a new forming section equipped
with a single layer headbox, felt section modification
and engineering for upgrading the existing auxiliary equipment
such as approach flow system, vacuum plant and sectional
drive system. The crescent former is Toscotec Ahead 1.5
type.
Once the rebuilding is completed, this mill “will
become one of the best-qualified producers of waste paper
based jumboThe line comprises two stock preparation plants
for long and short virgin fibers, a paper machine feeding
group, a Crescent former machine top. operating speed of
1850 m/min and mm of net width at reel up. It will feature
Yankee cylinder of 16' diameter and a single press of 1040
mm diameter. It also includes all AC and DC motors and
other equipment required.
The machine will be the second Recard unit the mill, according
to Lockwood-Post directory. PM1, which started up in 2005,
is also Crescent former machine. It has an identical trim
of 2750 mm but runs at only 800 m/ making 14,000 tons/yr.

A Recard machine in Orchids Paper Products (Prior Oklahoma)
sold for a maximum working speed of 1860 m/min reached
an operating speed of 2000 m/min producing toilet paper
15 16 g/m2 at reel up. For Recard this first machine to
reach such a speed.
BRAZIL
KIMBERLY-CLARK ADDS CAPACITY TO MOGI DAS CRUZES TISSUE
PLANT IN BRAZIL

Kimberly-Clark (K-C) Brasil has completed the transfer
of a 25,000 tpy tissue paper machine from its Bacraft mill
in Bahia state, northeast Brazil, to the Mogi das Cruzes
plant, in São Paulo state, southeast Brazil. "We
started production on May 9," K-C Brasil said in a
statement.
The company shut down the Bacraft mill in July 2006, citing
low operating rates and a need for investment. The move
was part of a restructuring plan to optimize operations.
As part of the plan, K-C Brasil is also to close its 36,000
tpy Cruzeiro tissue paper mill in Sao Paulo state, southern
Brazil, by the end of the month. "The Cruzeiro plant
has operated with losses in recent years," K-C Brasil
said in a statement.
With the PM from the Bacraft mill, the Mogi das Cruzes
plant will produce 70,000 tpy of tissue paper. The firm
also produces 50,000 tpy of tissue at the Correia Pinto
mill, Santa Catarina
state, southern Brazil.
NORTH AMERICA
VOITH PAPER TO RETURN TO NORTH AMERICAN TISSUE MARKET
After termination of its joint venture with Andritz on
1 October 1 2006, Voith Paper is again in the North American
tissue market.
Voith is one of the major worldwide equipment suppliers
for the pulp and paper industry. Over the last 10 years,
Voith and Andritz were involved in a joint venture to supply
and service the needs of the North American tissue market.
The world tissue market for Voith was divided into regions,
making the various Voith locations responsible for specific
market areas. For the North American market, Voith Sao
Paulo in Brazil is the responsible location to cover this
area. To assist with servicing the needs of its North American
customers, the company has created a tissue group, located
at Voith’s North American headquarters, in Appleton
Wisconsin.
This tissue group is responsible for all customer inquiries
regarding capital investments, small rebuilds and spare
parts in North America. Voith Sao Paulo in Brazil is the
COC (Center
of Competence) for tissue machine development. This Tissue
Machine group is comprised of over 50 dedicated experts,
onhand exclusively for the sale, design, and development
of new tissue technology. Also located at Voith Sao Paulo
in Brazil is the company’s PTC (Process Technology
Center), which opened in 1994. Since then, many new technologies
for tissue production have been developed in the PTC, such
as TissueFlex Press, “T” ribbed Yankee, and
most recently the ATMOS technology to produce premium.
PERU
CMPC ORDERS TISSUE MACHINE FOR PERU FROM RECARD
CMPC has ordered a crescent former tissue machine from
Recard for its mill in Lima, Peru. The machine will produce
tissue in the range of 14 to 41 g/m2, and have a capacity
of 116 tpd.
The tissue machine will have a maximum working speed of
2000 m/min, and net width at reel of 2750 mm. The Yankee
will have 16' (4.8-m) diameter and operate at 8.65 bar
of pressure. There will be a high efficiency gas hood.
Recard will also supply a pressure screen and fan pump
for a delivery rate of 93,000 l/min, three vacuum pumps,
an effluent clarifying plant, plus DC and AC motors and
other equipment.
The machine will use both virgin pulp and recycled fiber,
and stock preparation will be supplied by Lamort.

P&G ANNOUNCES BUSINESS
UNIT REALIGNMENT
In mid-May Procter & Gamble announced some business
unit realignments and associated changes to its executive
management structure effective 1 July 2007.
The company's
three global business units will be: Beauty Care, Global
Health & Well Being, and Household Care. All units
will report to Susan E. Arnold (53), currently vice chair
- P&G beauty & health, who is elected president
- global business units. She will continue to report to
AG Lafley, chairman of the board and chief executive officer,
and will continue to be based in Cincinnati.
The company has also established the role of chief operating
officer to oversee all global operations and functions
along with overall responsibility for the go-to-market
operational effort. Robert A. McDonald (53), currently
vice chair - global operations, is elected chief operating
officer. He also will continue to report to Mr. Lafley
and continue to be based in Cincinnati.
"We are making these moves to realign our business
units and top leadership structure to meet the changing
needs of our larger, more diverse, faster-paced global
business," said Lafley. "These changes are designed
to help P&G's businesses consistently win at both the
first (in-store) and second (at-home) moments of truth
with consumers.
"Our business has nearly doubled since
2000. We've had three major acquisitions including Clairol,
Wella and Gillette. And, we have tripled the pace of our
business initiatives over this same period," said
Lafley.
VON DREHLE CORPORATION PURCHASES NEW PRODUCTION FACILITY
In the USA, the von Drehle Corporation has bought the Laurel
Hill Paper Company assets in Cordova, North Carolina, making
it one of the nation’s largest independent paper
manufacturers for the “Away-From-Home” market.
The 40 hectare, 40,000 square meter facility encloses two
paper machines as well as six converting lines, with a
capacity of over 50,000 tons/year. PM1 trims at 2.6 m and
runs at 900 m/min making up to 14,000 tons/yr. PM2 trims
at 2.7 m and runs at 1600 m/min making up to 32,000 tons/yr.
This production will be used to support von Drehle’s
additional converting operations in Maiden, NC, Memphis,
TN, and Las Vegas, NV. “We do not plan on operating
converting equipment at this facility,” a spokesman
told Tissue World. “Existing equipment will be moved
to other locations.”
The company’s current
converting plant capacity is as follows: Maiden, NC -
four converting lines (one fully automatic line on order);
Memphis, TN - four converting lines; Las Vegas, NV- four
converting lines; Miami, FL - PM1 2.6 m trim, 10,000 tons/yr
and 550 m/min.
Sales are at least 95% continental US, with approximately
3-5% for export.
K-C UNVEILS FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND AD CAMPAIGN FOR VIVA BRAND
PAPER TOWELS
Nearly 2 million targeted subscribers to Reader's Digest
and Every Day with Rachael Ray will find something very
unexpected in their June issues – a full-page, custom-printed
sheet of Viva brand paper towel inserted into
the magazines by Kimberly- Clark Corporation. Some 737
miles (about 1100km) of the category's most cloth-like
paper towel was used to roll out this firstof- a-kind print
advertising initiative – enough paper towels to reach
from Chicago to Philadelphia.
The print ad includes a six-page advertising insert, which
sandwiches a sheet of Viva paper towel between advertising
copy that highlights the product's softness and strength.
A $1.00 coupon is incorporated into the last page of the
advertising insert to spur trial of the product. The promotion
is targeted to consumers who enjoy cooking and home entertaining
including 800,000 Every Day with Rachael Ray readers and
1 million segmentedReader's Digest subscribers.
