JIANGSU STARTS UP TRIO OF MACHINES (story contributed
by RISI)
APP China's subsidiary, Jiangsu Gold Hongye Paper, has started
up three 10,000 tpy tissue machines at its mill in the Suzhou
Industrial Park, Suzhou city, Jiangsu province. The move is part
of the tissue maker's expansion program, under which the group
aims to install another three 10,000 tpy units at the plant, with
startup scheduled for before September. Jiangsu Gold Hongye ordered
the six PMs from Chinese manufacturer, Hunan Jiaozuo Chongyi Light
Industry Machinery. All six are identical, with each having a
trim width of 2.8 m, an operating speed of 550 m/min and a design
speed of 600 m/min.
A company spokesman said that the first three
of the six units were installed and began trial runs at the end
of last year. The machines are not quite up to full commercial
production levels just yet as there is still some fine tuning
to be done. However, output from all three PMs is already being
sold on the domestic market. The firm expects to clear the last
snags by the end of February.
The source indicated that all six
PMs would focus on making low quality grades for products such
as napkins, kitchen rolls and toilet tissue. Basis weights are
above 15 g/m2 and the furnish comprises a mixture of chemical
fiber, bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp (BCTMP), bamboo pulp
and bagasse pulp. The nonchemicalfiber content can be as high
as 40-50 percent, depending on the customer.
The source went on
to explain that Chinese customers generally prefer to buy high
whiteness products, which require a higher content of chemical
fiber, while foreign companies such as Wal-Mart have no such concerns.
All the bleached hardwood kraft pulp for the tissue plant is being
delivered by APP China's Hainan pulp mill. The rest of the fiber
mix is bought from the market.
The six new units will allow Jiangsu
Gold Hongye to operate the plant's two existing machines with better efficiency,
according to the group. These two larger Andritz tissue units,
PM 1 and PM 2, each boast a capacity of 60,000 tonnes/yr and are
among the fastest in the world. The two machines are less efficient
when switching production across different grades, particularly
when the basis weights vary. With the startup of the smaller machines,
PMs 1 and 2 will now be focused on making top quality grades for
products such as facial tissue and towels, in the basis weights
below 15 gsm.

TWENTY TISSUE MACHINE AUTOMATION ORDERS FOR METSO
Process and quality control system orders in late 2006 for Metso
Automation from China and Indonesia demonstrate the sizable increase
of tissue production in Asia. A total of 17 new tissue machines,
13 in China and 4 in Indonesia will be equipped with metsoDNA
process automation and PaperIQ quality control systems. In addition
to equipment performance, customers saw Metso Automation’s local
presence as key to being the preferred supplier, according to
the company.
Metso Automation has also received comprehensive
automation orders in the past few months from three tissue manufacturers
in North America. Combined DCS and QCS with metsoDNA and PaperIQ
Plus are providing tissue makers with unsurpassed reliability
and stability in operation. The IQScanner Plus frame with its
compact dimensions and wide choice of IQSensors is proving ideal
for replacements and rebuilds as well as installation on new machines.
