Pudumjee rebuilds TM6 at Pune mill
Indian Company
Pudumjee Industries has chosen Italian manufacturer Toscotec for the rebuild
of TM6 in its Pune mill. In a project designed to increase production and
reduce energy consumption, Pudumjee will install a new Toscotec steel Yankee
dryer TT SYD 12FT in place of the existing cast-iron one. The scope of supply
also includes steam and condensate system upgrading, new mechanical drives
and a fourdrinier modification. The rebuild will be carried out by the end
of this year.
Pudumjee (part of MP Jatia Group) is a pioneer in the manufacture of specialty
papers in India. It is active in manufacturing tissues, real estate development
and other trading and is one of the largest tissue producers in the Indian
market, with ambitious plans for expansion and growth.
The company says its production philosophy is oriented towards eco-friendly
products and energy savings. In line with this, Ved Leekha, Executive Director
of Pudumjee Mills, said that the company strategy for the future expansion
is focused on quality products with low emission and energy savings.

CHINA
APP unveils big investment plans
APP China is getting back in to expansion mode in China, in the wake of the
country's economic recovery. The group has signed a preliminary agreement with
Voith Paper for three new 60,000 ton/yr tissue paper machines. Each has a width
of 5.65 m and a design speed of 2400 m/min. The deal is expected to be finalized
within a month.
One of the three PMs will be erected at the group's tissue mill in Suzhou,
Jiangsu province, owned by APP subsidiary Jiangsu Gold Hongye Paper. The installation
work for the unit is due to start in March next year, with start-up expected
in November.
The other two machines will go to a greenfield plant in Xinmin, Liaoning province,
and the facility in Ya’an, Sichuan province, which APP China acquired two years
ago. The former is owned by the joint venture, Shenyang Jinxin Pulp & Paper,
between the group and the state-run company Xinmin Paper Mill. The latter is
operated by APP China subsidiary Sichuan Jinan Pulp & Paper.
The expansion may not stop there. An APP China spokesman said the group is
looking to order more large tissue machines with similar capacities for its
Chinese mills.
The group currently has two tissue plants in China. The Suzhou facility operates
eight machines that have a total capacity of 184,000 tons/yr. The other mill
on Hainan Island houses 12 tissue PMs, with a combined capacity of 288,000 tons/yr,
which are integrated with the complex's 1.2 million ton/yr bleached hardwood
kraft pulp line.
Late last year APP China was forced to stop most of its expansion schemes,
after the global financial meltdown hit the country. At the time, Chinese banks
tightened credit and suspended borrowing for expansion, while the group was
struggling with falling sales and profits. But China has weathered the economic
storm well, after it launched a two-year ¥4 trillion ($586 billion) stimulus
packaging last November. Chinese banks have since eased credit, paving the way
for a wave of expansions in the country's pulp and paper industry.
As a result, APP China managed to resume construction work on a new 1 million
ton/yr fine paper machine, PM 2, at the Hainan complex in March. The work was
halted late last year when bank loans were suspended. To prepare for PM 2's
start-up, due 1 March 2010, the group is buying large volumes of market pulp
to build inventories at the site.

Shanghai Welfare orders two tissue PMs
Shanghai Welfare Group plans to spend ¥40 million ($6 million) to expand its
tissue paper capacity in China. The company has ordered two 12,000 ton/yr tissue
machines from Japan's Kawanoe Zoki for its mill in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province.
The plant is operated by its subsidiary Zhejiang Welfare Paper.
The company aims to start erecting one of the two PMs in May next year and
bring it on stream in September. The installation work for the other unit is
expected to start in November 2010, with start-up scheduled for March 2011.
The two identical units will each have a width of 2.76 m and a design speed
of 770 m/min. Both will use market pulp as furnish. The company intends to install
converting equipment at the facility to process output from the two new PMs
into a variety of tissue products, which will be sold on the domestic market.
The company is in talks with several suppliers for this equipment.
The site already houses 10 small tissue paper machines with a total capacity
of 15,000 tons/yr.

Jingzhou Zhiyin to add machine
China's Jingzhou Zhiyin Paper has ordered a 12,000 ton/yr tissue machine from
Kawanoe Zoki for its mill in Jingzhou city, Hubei province. Civil engineering
work kicked off at the site early this month. Startup is slated for January
next year. The PM will have a width of 2.76 m and a design speed of 770 m/min.
The machine will produce tissue in a basis weight range of 13-25 g/m? from
virgin fibre for converting on site into a variety of tissue products. These
will be sold on the domestic market.
The project cost is expected to total ¥50-60 million ($7-9 million).
