Improve turn-up efficiency with the Paprima Reel-JeT™

It is common practice to make the web transfer at the reel from a wound spool to a fresh spool by cutting an edge tail with a wet-end tail cutter, flipping the tail up on to the new spool with glue, and then widening the tail to full sheet width with the traversing tail cutter.

There are two main problems with this turn-up method. First, the tail is normally flipped up by applying glue manually to the spool. This procedure is both dangerous to the operator and inefficient because the process relies on the glue to rip up a wide tail. Second, the wet-end tail cutter then enlarges the tail to full sheet width at slow speed. This slow enlargement builds a log on the spool with a tapered profile as the successive wraps spiral from the tending side of the machine to the backside. This 'carrot' profile results in hundreds or even thousands of metres of wasted product at the converting operation.

The Paprima Reel-Jets™ is a completely automated, high-speed, dual cutting, water-jet tail cutter. It is positioned above the sheet just ahead of the reel and cuts a narrow tail using two water jets of about 1000-bar.

The cuts are made on the reel drum surface at the sheet centre as close to the spool nip as possible and can be either intersecting to make a free tail tip or parallel cut, depending on sheet weight. The tail is then transferred to the spool with a small amount of watersoluble glue that is sprayed directly on to the tail. Only about 10 ml of glue and 10 ml of high-pressure water are needed to make the turn-up, which takes about one second to complete. It is fast, simple, extremely clean and efficient.

More than 60 Reel-Jets™ have been installed worldwide with many of the most recent ones applied on tissue grades. The reasons for this are simple:

  • 0.5%-1+% production increase is common on tissue/towel
  • 99% turn-up efficiency is achieved from the lightest tissues to the heaviest towels
  • Symmetrical parent roll starts - no 'carrot' profiles
  • Spool bottom waste is reduced to less than 100 m
  • Extremely low glue consumption and cost - about €0.10/turn-up
  • Extremely low maintenance cost - about €10,000/yr
  • Project cost is typically less than €350,000
  • Paybacks are typically a few months and often as short as several weeks

In summary, the Paprima Reel-Jet™water-jet reel turn-up system has proven itself to be a versatile performer, consistently increasing turn-up efficiency and reducing bottom waste to levels generating fast project paybacks.

All the major tissue producers have operating Reel-Jets™. TW
