Cesar Iglesias to install its first PM
Dominican Republic consumer products
company, Cesar Iglesias, which specializes in
food and cleaning products manufacturing, is
investing $15 million to build its first tissue
plant in San Pedro de Macorís province. The
new crescent former tissue PM, which will be
supplied by Italy's Over Meccanica, will be
designed to produce 18,000 tons/yr of tissue
paper and will have a speed of 1000 m/min. The
project also comprises a converting line.
According to Jesus Feris, Cesar Iglesias's
food manager, the Dominican Republic
consumes 25,000-30,000 tons/yr of tissue paper.
Most of it comes from Brazil and Venezuela.
Following market trends, the company
decided to expand its business in the paper sector
as it noticed that paper suppliers are already
investing in converting lines. "We believe this
investment will be a differential as we'll improve
our current portfolio and reduce our production
costs," Feris added.
The company currently owns five converting
machines that produce napkins and toilet papers
at its San Pedro de Macorís facility. Cesar
Iglesias's new PM will manufacture both
mentioned products and also tissue papers to be
sold in the local market. "Our plan is to obtain
raw material, such as hardwood and softwood
pulp, from neighbour countries that we're still
evaluating," Feris commented.
Founded in 1910, Cesar Iglesias's main
products are olive-oil, pastas and detergent.

CMPC Absormex buys Voith machine
CMPC Tissue, Latin America's second largest
tissue paper manufacturer, acquired from Voith
Paper in early May a 5.6-m-wide machine to
manufacture tissue paper at its Absormex
subsidiary plant in Altamira, Mexico. The goal
is to increase production capacity to meet the
growing demand for its products in the Mexican
market.
The design speed of this new machine will
be 2000 m/min, with a 220-ton/day drying
capacity. The start-up is scheduled for the second
half of 2010.
Voith Paper's supply includes: approach
flow; the Masterjet II T headbox; Crescent
Former; press section; drying section with a
Voith Air Systems (PremiAir) hood and Voith
Ribbed Yankee cylinder; erection, start-up and
commissioning services, in addition to the
engineering required for the project.
Voith Paper will also be responsible for the
supply of the electrical and mechanical packages,
including erection and commissioning of all the
equipment necessary for the machine to operate,
by means of the PLP (Process Line Package)
system.
After the successful implementation of the
ATMOS technology at the CMPC Talagante
mill, in Chile, this is the first project between
Voith Paper and CMPC, which shows the
excellent relationship between the companies
says Voith.
CMPC Tissue, which is the Consumers
Products business of the larger Chilean pulp and
paper Empresas CMPC group, is one of the two
main absorbent and disposable paper products
groups in Latin America. In 2008, the company's
consolidated sales reached $870 million.
Voith Paper São Paulo has supplied
machines to over 50 countries and is recognized
worldwide by its technical competence and high
quality. Its machines respond for about 80% of
the Brazilian production of writing and printing
papers. Besides, the Center of Competence
(COC) for the development and manufacture of
tissue machines is also located at Voith Paper
São Paulo.
Metso machine starts up at Fapsa
The Metso supplied Advantage DCT 100 TS
tissue machine came successfully on stream on
19 June 2009 at Fabrica De Papel San Francisco
SA de CV (Fapsa) in Mexicali, Mexico.
Metso’s scope of delivery comprised a
complete tissue machine equipped with an
OptiFlo II TIS headbox, a 16-foot Metso Yankee
cylinder, an Advantage AirCap yankee hood,
sheet control, tail threading equipment and an
Advantage SoftReel P reel. The design speed
of the 2.6-m-wide tissue machine is 2200 m/min.
“We are extremely satisfied with the
performance of the machine during start-up. The
machine climbed the start-up curve very
smoothly and efficiently. Just 12 days after the
start-up it was making saleable paper at 2100
m/min without any difficulties. This is certainly
our best start-up ever, says Darío Palma y Meza
Espinoza, plant manager at Fabrica De Papel
San Francisco.
The new machine is the company’s second
Advantage DCT 100 TS tissue machine. Fabrica
De Papel San Francisco has successfully been
operating its first tissue machine of the same
type since 2006. The machine set a world speed
record for tissue production earlier this year by
running at an average speed of 2160 m/min
during 24 hours.
The new tissue line will use 100% recycled fibre
as raw material and will add another 30,000
tons/yr of bathroom tissue, napkin and towel
grades to the company’s current production.
Fabrica De Papel San Francisco now operates
four tissue production lines and converting
facilities, delivering tissue products for the
Mexican market.
